Having a search box easily accessible as soon as the dialer is opened would be nice. With only a few contacts its not bad but when you start using your phone as the goto source for everything it needs to be quick and easy.

Agreed - I think it's important we come straight into a number-pad (with the standard ABC DEF deal) and as you press keys (alpha or numeric) a filtered match list is displayed - then select the contact - maybe a default contact method (per contact) and an optional select contact method (phone, text, skype, email whatever)

This should be extended to include conference calls. The implementation is quite nice and functional in iOS. It can be adapted to the ubuntu design style.

The dialer should not replicate the People lens.

However, having that list of people on the main page of the dialer gives much faster access to the action. Also, you might want to enable the user to reset his "Most used" contacts or clear his recent contacts.

On the dial screen there is no point in having a call button at the bottom, instead, add a tapable dropdown at the bottom. One tap on the left part starts the call through the selected medium, on tap on the right part shows a dropdown list of possible mediums: skype, gsm, google voice, facebook, (possibly even messanging: whatsapp, sms). Possible actions on the dial screen might be: save to people,

The first row of icons in the connected view are medium specific. While a skype conference might have add people, send file or send text... a gsm call might have a show keypad.
